Is Money the Answer to Adversity?

     Lately, everything I have been reading speaks to the idea that we don't grow as Christians nearly as much in prosperous times as we do in trying times. I'm really hoping the Lord is not preparing me for a lesson, yet I know it's best to be stretched.
     Billy Graham, in his book, Hope for Each Day, said "Comfort and prosperity have never enriched the world as much as adversity." I sat talking to my friend Bobbie last night, who recently returned from a vacation with some wealthy friends. She noted that she'd known a lot of people with a lot of money and that they all had problems too.
     Money is not the answer. Inherently, we all know that, but we hope for just enough money to solve our current woes. God tells us this about money:
Matthew 24:6
No one can serve two masters.
Either you will hate the one and love the other,
or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other.
You cannot serve both God and money.
Proverbs 23:4-5
Do not wear yourself out to get rich;
do not trust your own cleverness.
Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone,
for they will surely sprout wings
and fly off to the sky like an eagle.
Ecclesiastes 5:10
Whoever loves money never has enough;
whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income.
This too is meaningless.

  1. Great versus! There's also a verse that says give me wealth so I may not do something like steak to eat or too much where I think I don't need you,,,or something along those lines. I might look up. Love your writings.

  2. I found the verse, it's Pro 30

    7 "Two things I ask of you, O LORD;
    do not refuse me before I die:

    8 Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
    give me neither poverty nor riches,
    but give me only my daily bread.

    9 Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you
    and say, 'Who is the LORD ?'
    Or I may become poor and steal,
    and so dishonor the name of my God.
