Seeking My Own Righteousness?

Is there a place in the life of a Christian to be right? What about self-righteous? Where do the two meet or cross paths? If I am seeking God's righteousness, can I also be seeking my own righteousness? Here are some scriptures on the matter of righteousness:

Luke 18:9-12 To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable:10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’
13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’
14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

I John 1:8-10 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

Titus 3:3-6 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.
(The blue emphasis above is mine.)

What I see in these scriptures, although there are many more scriptures on "righteousness," is that man's nature is to compare himself to others and note his "level of righteousness" compared to other individuals. But "we deceive ourselves" thinking in this manner, because there is "none righteous among us," (Ecc. 7:20) only God who, "saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy."
Simply put, there can be none that are "self-righteous." I can simply rest in the righteousness of God. I can do my best to emulate His righteousness and not count any of it as my own, but rather be "justified by his grace" due to His "mercy on me, a sinner."

  1. This is a humbling thing to,realize that on our own....there's nothing good we could do to even compare with anyone else. Jesus did it all and we simply should strive to walk in His righteousness. Thanks Kate
