Got Idolatry?
I looked up the definition of idolatry and found the following: "The definition of idolatry, according to Webster, is 'the worship of idols or excessive devotion to, or reverence for some person or thing.' An idol is anything that replaces the one, true God. The most prevalent form of idolatry in Bible times was the worship of images that were thought to embody the various pagan deities." God and Jesus in the old and new testaments go into great detail about idolatry especially in the area of other gods and money. Money can be a god as defined above, since anything we have "excessive devotion to," is idolatry. Do I worry about money? Am I concerned about losing or gaining money? How much of my time is spent thinking about money verses thinking about God?
Maybe you have other idols. What might they be…things that you hold onto with all your might, cling to, and hope never to be separated from…??? If they consume more time than your time with God and they don't serve the purpose of glorifying God or moving souls toward His Kingdom, then is it "reverence for some person or thing"? Is it idolatry? Only you and God know for certain. If you are not sure, ask Him. He will tell you the truth as He knows the motives of your heart.

1 Corinthians 4:5
Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes.
He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart.
At that time each will receive their praise from God.

Idolatry is sneaky. Just when we think we've amputated it from our life in one area, it sneaks into another. The only relief we can possibly get from its alluring is by being in His word and by walking by His Spirit.
