Ask for Counsel
The following is a response I gave in my college class regarding receiving godly counsel:
Benjamin Franklin said, “He that won’t be counseled can’t be
helped.” I could have used counsel in my early days as a school administrator,
but instead I received harsh advice after something had gone wrong. Soon I
became a survivalist in my skill developed, just trying to keep from getting into
trouble. I was surrounded by managers, ones who kept their heads down and eyes
averted to keep from getting singled out, but there was nary a leader to be
found.
I was too young
and naïve to know better, so I pushed on trying to make change and make a
difference with my staff and students. But managing situations was what was
expected and since I had little experience with administrative or personnel
problems, learning was random and completely lacking in professional
development or even guided reflection.
My counsel came
from my husband, a long time teacher, and the Lord. I did a lot of praying. In Proverbs
19:21-22 (NKJV) God tells us His purpose and promise for receiving counsel,
“Listen to counsel and receive instruction, That you may be wise in your latter
days. There are many plans in a man’s heart, Nevertheless the LORD’s
counsel—that will stand."
Now that God has given me opportunities, over the years, to learn from my mistakes, I attempt to offer assistance when others are struggling. I know how hopeless it feels to desire direction, mentoring, or guidance and receive nothing, but more policies, procedures, and punitive measures. Due to my experience, I completely concur with Proverbs 11:14 (NASB), “Where there is no guidance the people fall, But in abundance of counselors there is victory."

Is there someone that needs your counsel today? Or do you need to reach out to others, humble yourself, and ask for counsel? More likely than not, others are ready and waiting to assist you. Ask.
James 4:2, you do not have because you do not ask.
I'm thankful to have a friend in my life I can call on anytime to counsel me. Iron sharpens iron.
