When is Enough, Enough?

     We've had company the past few days and the woman told a story of an acquaintance who was quite wealthy. Yet, the acquaintance continued to work into her later years as she wanted to leave millions of dollars for her children. Her children, though, are adults and well established in their own careers. They have told their mother to quit working as they didn't need her money.
     This scripture, Ecclesiastes 4:8, reminded me of this story:
There was a man all alone;
he had neither son nor brother.
There was no end to his toil,
yet his eyes were not content with his wealth.
"For whom am I toiling," he asked,
"and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?"
This too is meaningless--
a miserable business!
     At what point is enough money, resources, antiques, jewelry, cars, etc., enough? How long do we toil for things that no one else even wants or needs? What is the purpose of pursuing wealth for the sake of more wealth? Is there an end to such accumulation, except death? So what is the life that is left behind? Is such a life full of love and memories or is it full of work and scheming?
     I believe God has a purpose for each of us. Are we living in earthly pursuits or godly obedience?
1 Peter 4:1-2
Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude,
because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin. As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for human desires, but rather for the will of God.

  1. Once I heard a speaker state that if you left more than $35,000 for your children, you're actually setting them up for bankruptcy.
