Trimming Debris
The dog got me up early, as she's been sick lately, and I let her outside only to see a man about 40 yards away wearing a helmet and pulling on a safety harness which was attached to the bucket of a large boom truck. His job as far as I could tell, after observing him the last couple of days, was to clean up the palm trees around our clubhouse. He would ride the bucket up over 50 feet to strip the dead ends of the palm fronds that had been left behind by previous tree trimmers.
I don't like heights, so nothing about riding that lift seemed like a good idea to me, except the fact that the man had a helmet on and a safety harness to protect him in case the boom jerked or descended abruptly and flipped him out of the bucket. My dad was riding in what he called a "cherry-picker" years ago and the person manning the bucket truck moved it suddenly and tossed my dad out onto the street like a rag doll, landing face first. Amazingly, besides some serious road rash, he came out of that incident pretty well.
Talking to friends today, over freshly baked cookies, we were discussing why some people experience horrific accidents and suffer long periods of time, while others in similar situations come out practically unscathed. Also, how do some people seem to have all the safety gear on and still get killed, while other's without any protective measures can be in similar situations and walk away as if nothing happened?
We talked about how some of these incidents are merely part of life, sort of God's way of trimming debris from our lives. We can be full of worries, concerns, and bitterness, but when we face death and live; we can feel as though we have been given a new lease on life. Like gold needs to be heated up to get rid of the impurities and forest fires must break out for some pine cones to actually break open and release the tree's seeds for new life, sometimes we need to crash and burn to get a new lease on life. Sometimes regardless of what we have done to protect ourselves, no safety measures will keep us from the consequences of living life on this earth.
We can rise up in our bucket, but eventually the boom will halt and we can go no farther. So we have no choice, but to eventually descend back to earth. But one day, those that have called on Jesus Christ to come into their lives, forgive them of their sins, and be their Lord and Savior, will rise up and no safety measures will be needed. God will call each Christian home to heaven and no bucket will be required. No harness of sin will hold them tethered to earth. Only the "helmet of salvation" is required, taking away all our sins and trimming away our debris then sending us flying on wings like eagles to our heavenly homes.

Ephesians 6:13-17
Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
