Love What We Do
I have a coaster that reads, "Do What You Love. Love What You Do." The Bible's version of this sentiment goes like this, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving" (Colossians 3:23-24 NIV).
What is the not so subtle difference between these ideals? The first "coaster" quote is about You. You doing you and loving it. The second quote from the scriptures is about Christ and you doing whatever you do in service to Him. So then what's in it for you, if you do it unto the Lord Christ? Verse 24 notes that "you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward."
How many of us have tried to please "human masters" in our daily work and possibly received a paycheck, but certainly didn't love what we were doing? From my experience, it's a change in mindset that is required to work unto the Lord verses Man. If we are diligent about people pleasing, we are most likely completely frazzled. If we are determined to be about pleasing God, we will not only feel more at peace, but He also promises rewards will be adding up in heaven for us as a result.
Sure, we have to work here on earth to pay the bills, but we can change our mindset and do ALL that we do as if "working for the Lord," and that will help us love what we do. If you have asked Christ Jesus, the Son of God, to forgive you of your sins, and asked Him to be the Lord of your life (not you being in control anymore, but in faith trusting that He knows what is best for you), then He will send His Holy Spirit to assist you in daily decision making and guide you in the way you should live. Then you will love what you do, regardless of whether your boss, spouse, friends, etc. love it, you will be loved and rewarded by the Most High God.
Colossians 3:1-2 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds of things above, not on earthly things.
