Troubled Hearts
I have a relative who collects hearts in nature like rocks, leaves, and other things that make a heart shape. Since Valentine's Day is over, I noticed many heart-shaped items were on clearance for 50% off. That's what it feels like to me, on those days when my heart is troubled, I'm 50% off, not 100% whole.
The Bible reminds us in John 14:1-4 that we will be 100% one day because God will call those who have put their trust in Jesus Christ, as God's Son and their Savior and Lord, home. Here's what John, one of the Apostles tells us that Jesus said to him and the other disciples at the Last Supper, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going."
That future hope of heaven, where our hearts will be made whole, no more trouble, no more tears, no more fears, and no more heartbreak, that's what Jesus is referring to in John 14. For now, we lament as King David did in Psalm 13:2, "How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart?" Yet, he ends this Psalm with praise as he remembers who His God is in verse 5, "But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation." With salvation, in Jesus Christ, we have reason to rejoice, even when life is causing us to have downtrodden hearts, there's a place for us being built, even now, in heaven.
Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
